Presidential Campaign Updates for August 14, 2024

Democratic enthusiasm for the upcoming presidential election has been on the rise, narrowing the partisan enthusiasm gap that existed earlier this year. In a recent Monmouth University poll, 85% of Democratic voters expressed enthusiasm for the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, up significantly from just 46% who felt enthusiastic about a Trump-Biden rematch in June. Meanwhile, GOP voters’ enthusiasm for the current matchup remains at 71%.

A new AP-NORC poll also showed growing excitement among Democrats, with 63% saying they would be excited if Harris were elected president. This marks a significant increase from March when only 40% of Democratic-aligned Americans expressed excitement about a Joe Biden victory. The poll also found that more Americans see Harris as committed to democracy, disciplined, honest, and having the right vision for the country compared to Trump.

While the polls did not directly compare a matchup between Harris and Trump, they did show that Harris is trusted more than Trump to handle abortion policy, issues relating to race and racial equality, and health care. On the other hand, Trump is trusted more for handling the economy, immigration, and the war in Gaza. Americans are evenly split on who would better handle crime or the war in Ukraine.

These polls suggest a shift in public perception of Harris and Trump, with Harris gaining ground in various policy areas. The growing enthusiasm among Democratic voters indicates a more competitive race and increased interest in the upcoming election.
