The powerful impact of a grassroots magazine on generations of queer women

Lesbian Connection, a reader-written magazine, has been a lifeline for queer women for fifty years, connecting the global Sapphic community through personal stories, advice columns, and community updates. It was started by Margy Lesher and her girlfriend in 1974 after a cross-country trip to find and connect with other lesbians. The magazine has always run on subscriber donations and remains free to lesbians worldwide.

The publication has faced debates over the inclusion of transgender and nonbinary lesbians in recent years, leading to some cancellations. However, readers like Kathy Munzer believe these conversations are essential for growth and learning within the community. Lesbian Connection’s core mission remains fostering a sense of togetherness for an oppressed group, providing inspiration and a feeling of community in a challenging world.

The magazine also includes a “Contact Dykes” section, allowing subscribers to connect with lesbians in their area, a feature that has been running for 50 years. Longtime staff member Cheryl VanDeKerkhove appreciates the publication’s commitment to allowing diverse voices and discussions, even when they may be challenging.

As Lesbian Connection enters its second half-century, there is a call for younger readers to subscribe and engage with the magazine, especially in light of potential challenges ahead in politics. Through stories, tolerance for diverse opinions, and a commitment to community building, Lesbian Connection continues to be an important resource and rallying point for queer women around the world.
