Man from Illinois apprehended, charged with attacking Representative Nancy Mace | Political news from Palmetto

U.S. Capitol Police arrested a 33-year-old man, James McIntyre, for allegedly assaulting South Carolina U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace. Mace claimed she was accosted by a “pro-trans man” on Capitol grounds. However, witnesses disputed her allegations, stating that the only contact they saw was a handshake. Despite this, McIntyre was arrested and charged with assaulting a government official.

Mace, a vocal member of Congress who has positioned herself as a prominent figure in the right’s anti-transgender movement, has been advocating for policies that restrict transgender rights. She recently filed a bill to ban transgender individuals from using bathrooms that align with their gender identities on federal property.

The incident took place inside the Rayburn House Office Building on December 10, where McIntyre allegedly shook Mace’s hand aggressively, causing her injuries. While Mace declined medical treatment, she accused McIntyre of assault. McIntyre, a foster care advocate who has spoken out about his experiences in the foster care system, was arrested by Capitol Police.

Witnesses at the event where the incident occurred described it as a passionate handshake and not an assault. Foster care advocates criticized Mace for having McIntyre arrested, especially considering he was advocating for trans rights. Mace has faced backlash for her stance on transgender issues, and the incident has sparked controversy surrounding her actions and the nature of the alleged assault.
