The process of executing a condemned killer in South Carolina through a firing squad

South Carolina is set to conduct its first firing squad execution in 15 years on Friday when Brad Sigmon, who killed his ex-girlfriend’s parents with a baseball bat in 2001, will face three state Corrections Department volunteers with rifles. Sigmon’s execution will be the first of its kind in the United States since 2010, with the last three firing squad executions in the country taking place in Utah.

Before the execution, Sigmon will be moved to a cell closer to the death chamber, where he will be strapped to a metal chair with a hood placed over his head. The firing squad volunteers will fire at a target over his heart from 15 feet away. The state will use .308-caliber Winchester 110-grain TAP Urban ammunition, which is designed to break apart upon impact with the prisoner’s rib cage.

Details about the firing squad, including the members and training, have been kept secret in accordance with a shield law passed in 2023. The state has assured that the firing squad, as well as the electric chair and lethal injection, are not in violation of the U.S. Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.
