What messages are acceptable to wear in a South Carolina polling place?

As South Carolina’s election day approaches, state officials are reminding voters of the rules regarding what they can wear to polling places and what they can and cannot take pictures of. With over 3.4 million registered voters, the state emphasizes that any political messaging on clothing, hats, shirts, or buttons is regulated, and ballot selfies are prohibited.

While wearing clothing with a specific candidate’s name is not allowed, more general political messages like “Let’s Go Brandon” or Black Lives Matter are permissible. However, slogans tied to Donald Trump or Kamala Harris are not allowed. The Poll Managers Handbook provides guidelines on what is acceptable attire in polling places.

A recent incident in Orangeburg County highlighted the importance of following these rules, as a voter was confronted about a hat he was wearing. State law prohibits the distribution of campaign literature within a certain distance of polling places on election days and during early voting.

As early voting comes to a close, the final day for early voting is November 2, with Election Day on November 5. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) warns against ballot selfies, as they can be considered a violation of laws against offering something of value for a vote. Voters are urged to follow these guidelines to ensure a fair and respectful election process.
