South Carolina Democrats are facing a significant loss as First Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe has announced his decision to switch parties, becoming a Republican. This leaves just three Democrats holding solicitor titles in the state, with Republicans holding the majority. Pascoe made his announcement at a Dorchester County GOP dinner, alongside other notable Republicans such as Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson and Dorchester County Sheriff Sam Richardson.
Pascoe, a graduate of The Citadel, has been the First Circuit Solicitor since 2004 and has been involved in high-profile cases such as prosecuting Mikal Mahdi for the murder of an Orangeburg police officer. He also led a state investigation into corruption in the state legislature, which resulted in the indictment of South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell. The First Circuit is comprised of Dorchester, Orangeburg, and Calhoun Counties, and Pascoe was one of the only Democrats elected county-wide in Dorchester.
As a Democrat, Pascoe ran unopposed in the 2024 general election and formerly considered a run for the Democratic Party’s nomination for the Attorney General’s office in 2010. His switch to the Republican Party marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
