Once More, South Carolina’s GOP Establishment Targets The Freedom Caucus

South Carolina’s Freedom Caucus is once again under attack from well-funded special interest groups ahead of the 2026 election cycle. The conservative wing of the Republican party is being targeted by the S.C. Growth and Freedom Alliance, led by Speaker Murrell Smith and uni-party allies.

The group’s advisor, Joel Sawyer, criticized the Freedom Caucus for their supposed “performative buffoonery” and lack of healthy debate. They were also called out for their association with former vice-chairman R.J. May III, who is under investigation for child sex abuse materials.

Despite the attacks, the Freedom Caucus remains steadfast in their principles of smaller government, lower taxes, and increased efficiency. Caucus leaders like Jordan Pace and April Cromer have stood by their decisions to vote against wasteful spending and unnecessary tax cuts, advocating for accountability and representing the interests of the people.

Cromer challenged Sawyer’s group to a public forum to discuss the issues openly, emphasizing the importance of standing up to bureaucrats, lobbyists, and backroom deals. She expressed disappointment in the lack of support from some Republicans in the state House, calling for a return to true conservative values.

Despite facing opposition from within their own party, the Freedom Caucus remains committed to their mission of shrinking government and putting the people first. They continue to fight for the principles they believe in, despite the challenges they face from special interest groups and party leadership.
