Former Clemson Star Hunter Renfrow Signs with Panthers After Year Away from Football
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) — After taking a year off from football to work at a South Carolina recycling company, former Clemson standout Hunter Renfrow has signed with the Carolina Panthers as a free agent. The 29-year-old wide receiver, who previously spent five seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, was drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft following a successful college career.
Renfrow, initially a walk-on at Clemson, made headlines during the 2017 National Championship Game with his last-second touchdown catch against Alabama, a moment that secured his legacy at the university. In the NFL, he had a standout season in 2021, recording 103 catches for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns, earning a trip to the Pro Bowl. However, injuries hindered his performance in subsequent years, culminating in his release from the Raiders in 2024.
During his year away, Renfrow worked with ESS Industrial in Woodruff, South Carolina, while training to return to professional football. He began workouts with teams in spring 2025, ultimately leading to his signing with the Panthers on April 28. Renfrow is expected to bring his skills and experience to Carolina’s roster this season.
