Fresno State Horticulture Unit: A New Era in Sustainable Agriculture
Fresno State’s Horticulture Unit is undergoing a transformative phase under the leadership of Nursery Manager Ernesto Duran, who took the helm over a year ago. Having previously collaborated with USDA research teams, Duran has brought valuable expertise to guide substantial renovations, enhancing research and education opportunities for students and the community.
The revamped facility now boasts seven greenhouses—including a certified organic space—a vertical farming operation, and expansive gardens dedicated to various plant species and student-led research. Advanced automation technologies have been installed to improve efficiency in irrigation and climate control, promising consistent growth conditions and significant operational cost savings.
“The past year has set the stage for innovation, where technology and education converge,” Duran stated. The upgrades enable hands-on learning experiences, critical for students in agriculture-focused courses. Significant renovations have increased greenhouse capacity by over 50%, allowing for a broader scope of projects and research.
This modernization is part of a larger initiative funded by state resources aimed at bolstering agricultural education. Dr. Rolston St. Hilaire, Dean of the Jordan College, commended the improvements for their role in enhancing research capabilities and promoting sustainable practices.
Generous donations have further supported these efforts. Notable contributions include advanced irrigation systems and a vertical hydroponic system for student research. This system allows for the cultivation of herbs, brassicas, and strawberries, enriching the educational landscape with practical experiences.
In addition to enhancing plant production, Duran and students are engaging in sustainability projects, including composting and worm farming, to reinforce classroom learning. The courtyard space is also evolving into a community hub, featuring drought-tolerant plants that serve both ecological and educational purposes.
Duran, motivated by a passionate commitment to agriculture, aims to foster a robust partnership between the university and local nurseries, positioning Fresno State as a leader in agriculture education and sustainable practices.
