South Carolina Voters Split on Trump, According to Latest Winthrop Poll

South Carolina Poll Reveals Deep Political Divides Over Trump and Social Issues

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A recent Winthrop University poll highlights significant divisions among South Carolinians regarding President Donald Trump’s performance, as he nears his 100th day in office. The survey shows a near split, with 44% approving and 43% disapproving of Trump’s job performance, a number that approaches 50% when excluding undecided respondents.

Political science professor Scott Huffmon, who conducted the poll, emphasized the stark partisan divides impacting state politics. He noted a pervasive distrust between parties, with participants believing the opposing side lacks ethical governance. This sentiment fuels a moral imperative among voters to prevent the other party from wielding power.

On social issues, a noteworthy 71% favor laws requiring transgender athletes to compete according to their birth sex, yet 62% support protections against discrimination for transgender individuals. Huffmon mentioned this contradiction reflects a nuanced voter attitude toward rights, even as certain issues become ideological flashpoints.

Opinions on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs are mixed, with 39% viewing them positively, while nearly half of Republicans feel the nation is on the right track under Trump’s leadership. The poll also indicates divisions over Confederate monuments and the designation of the U.S. as a Christian nation.
