The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team, under the remarkable leadership of head coach Dawn Staley, has enjoyed tremendous success, recently competing for a national championship. Despite a valiant effort, the team faced a tough defeat against the UConn Huskies in the title game. Following a stellar season where the Gamecocks clinched impressive victories over teams such as Tennessee Tech, Indiana, and Duke, a couple of players have chosen to reassess their futures.
Among these is Sakima Walker, who has officially announced her transfer from the Gamecocks, committing to the University of California as a grad transfer. Walker shared her decision on social media, expressing her excitement with a series of photos alongside her new coach, Charmin Smith. "This one’s personal," Walker stated, emphasizing her motivation behind the move.
Over the past season, Walker faced challenges in securing playing time, averaging just 1.4 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.3 assists per game, with limited minutes on a Final Four-caliber team. In total, she appeared in 15 games, averaging just 5.5 minutes on the court.
The 6-foot-5 center began her collegiate career at Rutgers before transferring to South Carolina, where she spent two seasons competing in the SEC. Throughout her college career, Walker has tallied averages of 2.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 0.2 assists per game.
As she embarks on her fifth and final season with the Golden Bears, the basketball community is eager to see how Walker will shape her new journey in California and contribute to her new team.
