Greenwood County: A Historical Perspective and Economic Evolution

Greenwood County, established in 1897, spans 456 square miles and had a population of 71,074 as of 2020. Nestled in the lower Piedmont region, southwest of the Saluda River, its boundaries were drawn from Abbeville and Edgefield Counties as part of an effort to bolster the political strength of Ben Tillman’s rural base. Rich in Revolutionary War history, the county is highlighted by the historical town of Ninety Six.

A significant development in the county’s infrastructure came in 1940 with the completion of the Buzzards Roost Dam on the Saluda River, which created Lake Greenwood and a county-owned power plant. For decades, the textile industry served as the economic backbone of Greenwood. However, in the 1950s, local leaders successfully spearheaded initiatives to diversify the economy, culminating in 1988 when Fuji Photo Film opened a manufacturing facility in the area, marking a new era of industrial growth. Greenwood County’s rich heritage and evolving economy continue to shape its identity.
