North Korea announced the construction of a new road bridge linking it to Russia, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral relations, according to state media. The bridge, spanning the Tumen River, was officially initiated during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea in 2024. The new bridge will be situated near the existing “Friendship Bridge,” a rail link established in 1959 post-Korean War. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin emphasized the project’s importance, stating that it symbolizes both nations’ commitment to improving friendly relations and fostering regional cooperation.
Measuring nearly 2,800 feet, the bridge will connect to Russia’s highway system and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. Mishustin highlighted that it will significantly boost transportation capacity and reduce costs, thereby supporting expanded trade and economic interactions.
Additionally, North Korea is reportedly receiving economic and military incentives in return for supplying arms to Russia amidst its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. South Korean intelligence indicates that Pyongyang is pursuing industrial modernization in 14 sectors with Russian assistance, including metals and energy. The situation has also revealed that around 600 North Korean troops have died fighting for Russia, out of a deployment of approximately 15,000 soldiers.
