In Singapore’s recent general elections, the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secured a significant victory, extending its 66-year reign. The party won 82 of 97 parliamentary seats, including five uncontested, and garnered 65.6% of the popular vote, up from 61% in the last elections in 2020. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who took office a year ago, expressed gratitude for the mandate, promising to work harder for the citizens.
Despite the PAP’s strong performance, some analysts noted the opposition Workers’ Party’s (WP) inability to gain further foothold, maintaining its 10 seats. Eugene Tan, a law professor, pointed out that voters signaled their trust in a party that has consistently delivered results. Wong, a U.S.-trained economist and finance minister, campaigned amid economic uncertainty triggered by global trade tensions and a potential recession, emphasizing stability and prosperity.
Though the PAP is seen as a pillar of stability, rising living costs, housing issues, and restrictions on free speech have prompted discontent, particularly among young voters. The opposition advocates for a more balanced political system, but face challenges including limited resources, fragmented support, and accusations of gerrymandering favoring the PAP. Pritam Singh, the WP leader, acknowledged the tough contest and committed to pushing for more representation.
While the Workers’ Party didn’t expand its influence, it did solidify its support in certain areas. Political analyst Bridget Welsh suggested that voters preferred stability amid global uncertainty and noted Wong’s efforts to engage younger populations through a refreshed political appeal contributed to the PAP’s success. The elections underscore the delicate balance between the need for change and the desire for continuity in governance.
