Junior Alvarado: Pursuing the Derby Dream Amid Immigration Challenges

LOUISVILLE — Junior Alvarado, a Venezuelan jockey with aspirations since childhood, is preparing for his sixth Kentucky Derby this weekend. Growing up in Barquisimeto, Alvarado began his journey in the racing industry as a "backboy,” dreaming of riding in one of the sport’s most prestigious events.

Alvarado, now 38, has competed in the Derby five times, hoping to secure victory on his horse, Sovereignty. The Derby, offering a $5 million purse, features 19 jockeys from around the world, showcasing the diversity of talent in American horse racing. An estimated 70% of U.S. jockeys are foreign-born, coming from countries with rich racing cultures like Venezuela, Mexico, and Panama.

As the Trump administration enacts stricter immigration policies, the racing community fears potential impacts on jockeys’ visa statuses. Many jockeys rely on P and O visas to compete in the U.S., and any changes could overhaul the competitive landscape. "Hearts are broken as opportunities fade for talented athletes due to immigration issues," Alvarado noted.

Alvarado’s sentiments reflect a broader trend; many Latino jockeys are thriving in the U.S. racing scene, with increased visibility and success. Jockeys frequently face long hours and personal sacrifices to achieve their goals. Immigration attorney Bonnie Smerdon emphasized the importance of foreign talent in racing, acknowledging that the industry relies on their success.

At a recent event, the Louisville Hispanic Chamber of Commerce honored several Latino jockeys, recognizing their vital contributions to the sport. Former champion Joel Rosario, a Dominican native, echoed this sentiment, speaking about his journey and the importance of supporting Latino representation in racing.

As the Derby approaches, the resilience of riders like Alvarado and others symbolizes hope for both personal dreams and the future of the sport.
