MUSC Hollings Cancer Center Leads Brain Tumor Care in South Carolina
MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, the sole provider of neuro-oncology specialists in South Carolina, is revolutionizing brain and nerve tumor care. With a focus on accessibility, the center offers remote follow-ups through seven locations statewide, enabling patients to receive high-quality care from Charleston. Drs. Scott Lindhorst and Alicia Zukas highlighted the advancements in their field, emphasizing the importance of remote technology, which includes telehealth stethoscopes to facilitate thorough patient examinations from afar.
In addition to their focus on remote care, the center is actively involved in clinical trials, particularly for glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor. Hollings participates in the GBM AGILE adaptive trial, which tests multiple therapies simultaneously, promising faster drug development. Lindhorst explained that patients’ motivations for joining trials vary, often blending altruism with the desire for access to innovative treatments.
The center also celebrates a breakthrough for patients with neurofibromatosis, having introduced mirdametinib, the first drug targeting plexiform neurofibromas. This benign tumor can cause significant pain and disability. Previously limited to pain management, this new medication could benefit approximately 3,000 patients statewide. The center remains committed to advancing care and improving outcomes for those affected by these challenging conditions.
