Baseball Falls to Florida in Sunday Matchup – University of South Carolina Athletics

Columbia, SC – Gamecocks Struggle Against Florida in Doubleheader

The University of South Carolina baseball team faced a tough day on Sunday, May 4, as they were defeated by Florida in both games of a doubleheader at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park. The Gamecocks first lost the rescheduled game from Saturday, 22-3, followed by an 8-0 setback in the regular matchup.

In the first game, Carolina trailed 5-0 after four innings but managed to score a run in the fifth due to a Florida fielding error. KJ Scobey contributed with a home run in the sixth, marking his fifth of the season, while Jordan Carrion added an RBI single in the seventh, narrowing the score to 6-3. However, Florida’s offense exploded for five runs in the eighth and 11 in the ninth, sealing the Gamecocks’ fate.

The second game saw Carolina struggling offensively, recording only four hits while Florida’s bats were lively, featuring three home runs. The Gators scored consistently throughout the game, securing runs in multiple innings.

Jake McCoy was credited with the loss in game one, yielding three hits and two runs across three innings. Notably, Blake Jackson reached base five times throughout the doubleheader, while teammates Nathan Hall and Jase Woita each tallied two hits. In game two, Ashton Crowther took the loss, allowing just one earned run over four innings. Cayden Gaskin led the Gamecock offense with two hits.

Carolina left 13 runners stranded in the first game, a statistic that highlights their missed opportunities. Hall currently boasts a .345 batting average and leads the team with 12 doubles.

Looking ahead, the Gamecocks will have a break in midweek action before facing Auburn on Thursday, May 8, at 8 p.m. EDT, a game that will be broadcast on ESPNU.
