Columbia University Eliminates 180 Positions Due to Loss of Federal Grant Funding Under Trump Administration

Columbia University announced on Tuesday the layoff of 180 staff members linked to federal grants after the Trump administration revoked $400 million in funding, citing the university’s failure to address harassment of Jewish students. The administration laid out several demands for reinstating funding, which included restrictions on protest actions, enhanced security measures, and administrative changes in certain academic departments.

In a letter to the community, Columbia’s Acting President Claire Shipman and Provost Angela V. Olinto explained that the university is attempting to restore partnerships with government agencies while also addressing immediate financial pressures. The financial strain resulted in layoffs affecting 20% of the staff associated with the impacted grants, as the university prepares for ongoing negotiations with federal authorities concerning unpaid research awards.

The layoffs have sparked considerable outrage among students and faculty. During a recent 25-hour “speak out,” participants criticized university leaders for acquiescing to federal demands, with student David Guirgis describing the cuts as an attack on academic freedom and scientific research. Columbia officials reaffirmed their commitment to innovation but acknowledged that the financial strain necessitated workforce adjustments.

To ensure long-term fiscal stability, the university plans to implement measures such as salary freeze across most positions, workforce attrition, and a voluntary retirement incentive program. University leadership emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by higher education institutions and the complexity of navigating these financial hurdles. The White House has yet to comment on the situation.
