Florida Man and His Dog Victims of Suspected Bear Attack

Authorities in Florida are investigating a suspected bear attack after 89-year-old Robert Markel and his dog were found dead at his home in Jerome, Collier County, on Monday morning. Wildlife officials reported that the bodies were discovered several hundred yards apart. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesperson George Reynaud confirmed that the incident was indeed a bear attack, although it is still uncertain if a single bear or multiple bears were involved. Investigators believe the attack may have occurred at different times for the man and his dog.

In response to the incident, officers established a perimeter and deployed drones to locate the bear or bears involved. Bear traps have also been set up in the area. DNA evidence collected from the scene is expected to assist officials in understanding the events that led to this tragedy. According to the Florida Wildlife Commission, the bear is likely a Florida black bear, the only species naturally found in the state, with an estimated population of about 4,050.

This incident raises concerns over human-wildlife interactions, particularly in areas close to natural habitats like the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area. Wildlife officials are taking this situation seriously, aiming to locate the bear to prevent any further attacks and ensure public safety. The community is advised to stay alert and report any bear sightings as the investigation continues.
