South Carolina Women’s Tennis Team Concludes Season with Loss to UNC in NCAA Tournament
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team ended its 2024-25 season on a challenging note, falling 4-0 to the fifth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday at the Chewning Tennis Center.
In doubles play, North Carolina made a strong start, securing the first win on court 3 where Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman defeated Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman 6-3. Despite a late push from South Carolina’s Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella, who are ranked No. 10 in the nation, the Tar Heels clinched the doubles point as Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton posted a 6-4 victory on court 1.
In singles action, the Tar Heels continued dominating. On court 4, Hamilton blanked Misa Malkin with a 6-0, 6-0 score. Theadora Rabman then added to the tally, winning against Olympe Lancelot 6-2, 6-1 on court 3. Claire Hill secured the match for UNC by defeating Buchwald 7-5, 6-3 on court 6.
While South Carolina fought hard, three matches were left unfinished, indicating the potential for a more competitive outcome. Court 1 featured a top-15 clash, with No. 3 Brantmeier leading No. 15 Hamner 5-3 in the third set after splitting the first two sets. Meanwhile, on court 2, Tatum Evans was up 2-0 in the final frame against Carnicella, who is ranked No. 47, and Carson Tanguilig led 2-1 on court 5 against Larsson.
