Press Release: Closure of Controversial Deepfake Site MrDeepFakes
The infamous AI-generated pornography website, MrDeepFakes, has officially shut down following the termination of a crucial service provider. The announcement, posted on its homepage, clarified that data loss has rendered continued operation impossible, emphasizing, “We will not be relaunching.” The domain will eventually expire, and the site disclaims responsibility for any future usage.
MrDeepFakes gained notoriety for hosting nonconsensual deepfake content, particularly targeting celebrities, but also violating the privacy of many non-public figures. A 2024 study highlighted the website’s staggering collection of 43,000 deepfake videos, primarily depicting women, which amassed over 1.5 billion views. Unfortunately, many instances contained disturbing violent imagery, including rape and abuse, despite the platform’s claims to ban such content.
In response to the rising issues surrounding deepfakes, the U.S. House of Representatives recently approved the TAKE IT DOWN Act, aimed at establishing tough penalties for distributing intimate depictions without consent. The bill requires hosting platforms to implement processes for swift removal of such content. It has now passed the Senate and awaits President Trump’s signature, marking a pivotal step in addressing digital exploitation.
