Daniel Orellana, a 25-year-old Guatemalan man with no prior criminal record, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Monday at a gas station in Framingham, Massachusetts, while on his way to work. His family claims the arrest was wrongful and is demanding justice. According to his father, Arquimedes Orellana, ICE agents approached Daniel, mistakenly identifying him with another individual. Daniel asserted his innocence, stating he needed to answer a work call, but ICE took his phone and detained him after questioning his immigration status.
Witness Enrique Martinez, a Shell gas station employee, confirmed the arrest occurred inside the station, where Daniel’s vehicle was later left abandoned. After several hours of searching, the family managed to locate his car and eventually learned from Daniel about his detention. His girlfriend, Zulema Alfaro, revealed they had been in communication, and Daniel described the situation as a misunderstanding.
The Orellana family emigrated from Guatemala three years ago to escape violence, and Daniel was on the verge of graduating with a law degree before the incident. Despite understanding the government’s intent to enforce immigration laws, Arquimedes expressed concern over the detention of innocent and productive individuals like his son.
Currently, Daniel is being held in an immigration detention center in Plymouth, and a lawyer is assisting the family in the case, hoping for a resolution soon. Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra has reached out to ICE for comments regarding the incident but has not received any response. The family remains hopeful for Daniel’s swift return home.
