Gamecocks Soar with Doubleheader Sweep Against Alabama
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 14/12 South Carolina softball team wrapped up its regular season on a high note, sweeping a doubleheader against the No. 19/14 Alabama team on Saturday, May 3. With victories of 3-1 and 7-2, the Gamecocks closed their season at 39-14 overall and 13-11 in conference play.
Head coach Ashley Chastain Woodard celebrated a remarkable milestone, recording her 39th win of the season—the highest for a first-year coach in the program’s history.
In the first game, which resumed after being suspended due to weather from the previous night, pitcher Kelsey Gress (12-8) showcased her skills, striking out five batters and yielding only five hits over seven innings. The Gamecocks scored early, with Lexi Winters hitting a three-run homer in the first inning, providing a solid lead that propelled them to victory.
The second game saw Gress set down the Crimson Tide in the first inning before being relieved by Nealy Lamb (10-3) following Alabama’s only run in the second. The Gamecock offense erupted, scoring five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Quincee Lilio and an RBI single from Karley Shelton.
As lightning caused another delay in the bottom of the fifth, officials opted to call the game, solidifying the Gamecocks’ 7-2 win.
With this sweep, South Carolina secured its fifth SEC series win of the season and its sixth against a ranked opponent. The Gamecocks now set their sights on the SEC Tournament in Athens, Georgia, where they will face Alabama or Auburn on Wednesday at approximately 8:00 p.m. For ongoing updates on the team, follow @GamecockSoftbll on Twitter and @GamecockSoftball on other social media platforms.
