Pilot Error Blamed for Fatal Marine Helicopter Crash in San Diego’s East County

The official investigation into the military helicopter crash that killed five Marines on February 6, 2024, has concluded, revealing “pilot error” as a primary cause. The 1,140-page report indicated that the mishap pilot failed to maintain safe obstacle clearance and Visual Flight Rules (VFR) visibility, leading to a controlled flight into terrain. Contributing factors included moderate icing and cloud layers which impeded safe navigation.

The crew, part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, had previously conducted a training flight before their return to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. They made a precautionary emergency landing at Imperial County Airport due to engine warnings, which raised questions about communication related to their readiness to return. The squadron’s commanding officer approved their flight home, but investigators concluded he exceeded his authority in doing so; he was later relieved of his position.

The helicopter was reported overdue, and search efforts began. All five Marines were sadly found deceased the following day. Family members, particularly Sgt. Alec Langen’s father, expressed their heartache and confusion, wishing to understand whether the crew made collective decisions or if one individual was solely responsible.

The investigation uncovered limitations, such as the lack of onboard flight data, preventing ultimate clarity on the final moments before the crash. Langen advocated for the installation of voice recorders in military aircraft to ensure better accountability and prevent similar tragedies, although a Marine Corps spokesperson stated that the costs were prohibitive due to the CH-53E’s limited service life. As a result of the investigation, multiple recommendations have been implemented for improved policies and training within the 3rd MAW.
