Vance Celebrates ‘Industrial Renaissance’ During Visit to South Carolina Steel Plant

Vice President JD Vance Launches U.S. "Industrial Renaissance" at Nucor Steel Plant

HUGER, S.C. – On Thursday, Vice President JD Vance visited the Nucor Steel plant in South Carolina to celebrate what he termed an “industrial renaissance” in the United States, attributing the shift largely to President Donald Trump’s strategies to bolster domestic industry. This visit coincided with the administration’s events commemorating Trump’s first 100 days in office.

Addressing several hundred attendees, including steel workers and local leaders, Vance noted, “These are the products that make our citizens’ lives better,” emphasizing the importance of American manufacturing. Nucor’s executives have praised Trump’s tariff policies on imported steel, which significantly boosted the company’s stock, although fluctuations have followed.

During his visit, Vance highlighted Nucor’s impressive backlog of orders — currently 25% higher than last year — which CEO Leon Topalian noted as a sign of a recovering economy. Vance’s appearance also spotlighted South Carolina’s role as a key political state, where Trump’s influence remains strong.

Accompanied by Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, Vance argued that there should be no conflict between enhancing domestic manufacturing and environmental protection. He proclaimed, “We have started drill, baby, drilling,” suggesting that energy independence would lead to cheaper gas and self-reliance for America. However, drilling off South Carolina’s coast has long been a contentious issue.

Vance’s comments came amid political developments within Trump’s administration, but he refrained from discussing such matters directly. Zeldin expressed optimism regarding the potential appointment of former Rep. Mike Waltz as U.N. ambassador, reacting positively when informed by a reporter.
