Tragic Accident Claims Life of Iva Man in Anderson County
Anderson County, SC – May 9, 2025 – A tragic incident unfolded this afternoon on Reece Haynie Road in Iva, resulting in the death of a 58-year-old man from a falling tree limb. Alan Leland Smith was engaged in renovations on a property he had inherited from his father when the accident occurred around 2:15 PM.
According to Deputy Coroner Don McCown, Smith was collecting small pieces of wood near a dead tree for burning. While working, a 12-foot-long, two-foot-diameter limb unexpectedly broke free from the tree and struck him, causing fatal blunt force trauma.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and the Coroner’s Office subsequently ruled the incident an accident. "It’s a distressing reminder of the inherent dangers of working with trees," McCown remarked. The local community is mourning Smith’s unexpected passing, remembering him as a dedicated individual who was committed to preserving his family’s legacy.
