North Korea Reports Leader Kim Oversaw Missile Tests Mimicking Nuclear Attacks on Rivals

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen tests of short-range ballistic missile systems, simulating nuclear counterstrikes against U.S. and South Korean forces, as reported by state media. This event highlights growing tensions attributed to joint military exercises by the North’s rivals. Following multiple missile launches detected by South Korea from North Korea’s eastern coast, the tests appear linked to potential arms exports to Russia amid its conflict in Ukraine.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the recent tests involved a mobile ballistic missile system resembling Russia’s Iskander and 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers, both of which could be equipped with tactical nuclear weapons. The exercises aimed to enhance military unit capabilities to execute missile attacks under North Korea’s nuclear control system, reinforcing a swift response to nuclear crises. Kim criticized the U.S. and its allies for escalating military drills around the Korean Peninsula, viewing these as preparations for nuclear conflict.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry labeled the launches a “clear act of provocation,” violating U.N. Security Council resolutions and threatening regional peace. The South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that missiles were fired from Wonsan, reaching approximately 500 miles. The representatives speculated these tests could serve to assess weapons for potential export.

Tensions have intensified as Kim accelerates nuclear and missile advancements while supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine. The latest missile launch marks the first notable activity since early March and reflects North Korea’s ongoing military ambitions, including increased production of artillery as emphasized by Kim.
