U.S. Intelligence Agencies Directed to Gather Information on Greenland

U.S. intelligence agencies have been directed to intensify their surveillance efforts in Greenland, reflecting ongoing interest from President Donald Trump regarding the acquisition of the island. The directive, reported by The Wall Street Journal, focuses on gathering intelligence about Greenland’s independence movement and local perceptions of U.S. resource interests. This has raised objections from Denmark, which oversees the semi-autonomous territory. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed deep concerns over the espionage directive, stating, “We do not spy on friends,” and has plans to address this with the U.S. ambassador.

While the White House National Security Council refrained from commenting on intelligence matters, it affirmed the U.S. concern about Greenland and the Arctic’s security. In response to the news, Tulsi Gabbard, the director of National Intelligence, criticized the media, alleging they were complicit in undermining Trump by leaking classified information. Gabbard indicated that three alleged leaks had been referred for possible criminal prosecution.

Critics, including former CIA officer Marc Polymeropoulos, questioned the need for such intelligence operations against an ally, suggesting that diplomatic channels would be more appropriate for this information-gathering effort. Trump himself has previously hinted at the potential for forceful acquisition, stressing the strategic importance of Greenland in international security. However, a poll indicated that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the U.S. With global warming heightening competition for Arctic resources, Greenland’s strategic and material value has gained prominence for global powers.
