Vietnam Veteran Graduates from SC State Days Before 80th Birthday
Orangeburg, SC – Linwood Riddick, a Vietnam War veteran, accomplished a remarkable milestone by graduating from South Carolina State University on Friday, just two days shy of his 80th birthday. After serving in the military, Riddick spent 30 years running a souvenir business and retired at the age of 72. His journey back to education began when he overheard a conversation about the Orangeburg Massacre, a tragic event in 1968 where police shot into protesting students, killing three. Inspired to honor the memory of those who suffered, Riddick decided to pursue a degree.
During the commencement ceremony, SC State President Alexander Conyers recognized Riddick, who commuted an hour daily from Summerville to attend classes, saying, "Mr. Riddick, you inspire us all." Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music industry, Riddick emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, stating, "Your mind, your body, your soul and spirit — they must be utilized."
Post-graduation, Riddick expressed a desire to mentor younger students, encouraging them with the message: "If I can do it, you can do it. It’s not impossible if you try." His story of resilience serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of education at any age.
