Chemical Spill in Mauldin Leads to Emergency Response and Road Closures
MAULDIN, SC – A chemical spill at VLS Piedmont, a waste treatment plant on South Main Street, prompted a swift response from local authorities on Friday morning. At 11:24 a.m., the Mauldin Fire Department (MFD) received reports of a hazardous incident, leading to an evacuation of the facility. Just ten minutes after their arrival, a fire erupted within the building.
The Mauldin Police Department established a detour from Bethel Road to Route 276 to redirect traffic away from the affected area, as some vapor clouds were observed escaping the structure. While MFD tackled the fire from outside using a master stream device, air quality was monitored nearby, and residents on Drury Lane were advised to shelter in place as a precaution.
The Greenville Fire Department’s HAZMAT unit confirmed that the area was safe after conducting air tests. Preliminary investigations indicated that a chemical reaction in a vat caused off-gassing and subsequent ignition. One employee exposed to the vapors was hospitalized for observation. The incident was contained, allowing Route 417 to reopen by 1:15 p.m. Further information will be released once the investigation concludes.
