Gamecocks Experience Tough Doubleheader Against No. 8 Auburn
AUBURN, AL – The University of South Carolina baseball team faced a challenging doubleheader against the eighth-ranked Auburn Tigers on Friday, May 9, succumbing to defeats in both games at Plainsman Park.
In a thrilling first game, the Gamecocks fell 11-10, culminating in a dramatic walk-off squeeze bunt by Auburn’s Eric Guevara. The Tigers initially led 2-0 thanks to Guevara’s home run but saw the Gamecocks respond with a solo shot from Beau Hollins. After a series of back-and-forth scoring, South Carolina took an 8-7 lead in the sixth inning, highlighted by KJ Scobey’s powerful three-run homer.
Auburn responded swiftly, reclaiming the lead with three runs in the sixth. However, the Gamecocks managed to tie the game in the ninth with a sacrifice fly from Evan Stone, pushing the excitement to an edge-of-the-seat finish. Despite the loss, Hollins impressed with a 4-for-5 batting performance, and Scobey contributed significantly with four RBIs. The loss was assigned to Ashton Crowther, who allowed an unearned run over three innings.
In the second game, South Carolina struck first with a run from Jase Woita and a two-run homer from Stone, giving them an early 3-0 lead. However, Auburn rallied, scoring six runs over the fifth and sixth innings, including a decisive three-run homer from Cooper McMurray. The Gamecocks managed only three runs in total, with Carrion leading the offense, but the team ultimately fell 11-3.
Looking ahead, the Gamecocks plan to bounce back with a home game against Winthrop on Tuesday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. This matchup will be accessible via SEC Network Plus.
