South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame Welcomes Gamecock Legends
Columbia, SC – Monday marked a momentous occasion at the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where two former University of South Carolina Gamecock stars, Shannon Johnson and Landon Powell, were celebrated as part of the illustrious 2025 class.
Shannon Johnson, a renowned guard from Hartsville, SC, dazzled at USC from 1992 to 1996, earning All-SEC honors three times and All-America recognition during her senior year. With a career average of 20.5 points per game and 2,230 total points, she stands as the program’s third all-time scorer. Johnson, the first Gamecock to join the WNBA, enjoyed a stellar ten-year career and was a five-time All-Star. “This means the world to me,” Johnson remarked, reflecting on her return to her roots. “I’m so honored to be recognized.”
Landon Powell, a switch-hitting catcher from Apex, NC, played for the Gamecocks from 2001 to 2004. His significant contributions include being part of three College World Series teams and earning All-America honors in his final year. Powell holds impressive career statistics, ranking sixth in home runs and second in doubles in USC history. “This is incredibly humbling,” he expressed during the ceremony. Powell, now head coach at North Greenville University, led the Trailblazers to the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship.
The 2025 Hall of Fame class also includes renowned athletes like Richard Seymour and Clint Dempsey, further solidifying the ceremony’s significance in celebrating South Carolina’s rich athletic legacy. With the induction of Johnson and Powell, the event underscored the enduring impact of Gamecock sports on the community.
