White House Announces Deported Migrants, Primarily Asian and Latino, to Stay in Djibouti for Two Weeks

A flight carrying eight migrants from Texas, originally set for South Sudan, will now pause in Djibouti for two weeks due to a court ruling. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt criticized U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy for his order, which followed a hearing that highlighted the Trump administration’s violation of a previous injunction. This injunction prohibited deporting individuals to third countries without giving them the chance to express fears of torture or persecution, or proper notification.

Judge Murphy mandated that the deportees receive legal counsel and a 15-day period to initiate immigration proceedings to contest their deportation. During a press briefing, Leavitt condemned this ruling, suggesting it jeopardizes U.S. diplomatic relations and endangers federal agents by forcing them to remain in close quarters with the deported individuals, whom she described as “monsters.”

She cited the criminal records of the eight migrants, labeling Murphy’s decision as judicial overreach, and argued it interferes with U.S. foreign policy and national security. The judge noted that the deportees were informed of their destination just the evening before their departure, leaving them insufficient time to consult with attorneys or family—thus making it impossible for them to challenge their deportation effectively. Murphy concluded that the actions taken by the Department of Homeland Security breached the court’s order. As the situation unfolds, the federal government must navigate these legal challenges while adhering to the ruling to ensure the migrants’ rights are respected.
