In Commack, New York, a tragic incident occurred early Thursday when a man was killed and another injured after they were unknowingly dumped into a garbage truck while sleeping in a dumpster. The two men had taken shelter in a dumpster located at a shopping plaza when it was emptied, a procedure that typically occurs in the early hours. The truck subsequently made its way to William Rogers Middle School in nearby Kings Park, nearly six miles away.
Around 6:30 a.m., someone noticed an individual inside the back of the garbage truck and alerted authorities. The injured man was rescued and taken to Huntington Hospital for treatment of a leg injury. Unfortunately, the other man was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. Though police have not released the identities of the men, they indicated they were both likely still alive when dumped but did not suspect any foul play.
In response to the emergency, school officials at William Rogers Middle School reassured parents that the incident at the school was “completely unrelated” to any threat to students or staff, emphasizing that classes continued as scheduled without any disruptions. The medical examiner’s office has been tasked with determining the cause of death.
This devastating event underscores the vulnerabilities faced by individuals experiencing homelessness, bringing to light the urgent need for support and awareness in the community.
