Tourists in South Carolina Make Haunting Discovery Possibly Tied to Centuries-Old Burial Site on Edisto Island

Tourists Unearth Centuries-Old Human Remains on Edisto Island

A routine walk on Edisto Island turned extraordinary when a group of tourists discovered what initially seemed to be fossils, only to find they were human remains dating back centuries. The chilling find, made last Friday, has caught the attention of local authorities, as the site is linked to the historic 19th-century settlement of Edingsville Beach, once a fashionable retreat for Charleston’s elite.

According to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, early assessments indicate that the remains may originate from a forgotten burial site. The remains, which include a skull and scattered bones, will be subjected to forensic analysis to determine their origin and age, as confirmed by county coroner Rich Harvey.

This is not the first time human remains have surfaced on Edisto Island; previous discoveries were made in 2015. The ancient settlement, established in 1825, featured numerous homes and amenities but was ultimately lost to coastal erosion and devastating hurricanes in 1885 and 1893.

As scientists begin their work, the community awaits answers about the history hidden beneath their shores. The timeline for uncovering the full story behind these remains remains uncertain.
