Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette Advocates for Judicial Election Reforms and Government Efficiency in South Carolina
Aiken, SC — During a recent meeting of the Aiken Republican Club, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette expressed her support for significant changes to the way judges are elected in South Carolina, along with efforts to make state governance more efficient. Responding to questions regarding judicial elections, Evette advocated for a system where judges of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Circuit Court, and Family Court would be nominated by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate, akin to the federal system. She believes this would streamline the process and reduce dependence on the legislative body’s majority—currently, 46% of state senators and 27% of representatives are lawyers.
When queried about immigration policies, Evette defended the Trump administration’s campaign to restrict Medicaid access for non-U.S. citizens, emphasizing that Medicaid was intended for citizens only.
Moreover, Evette, an accountant by profession, shared her vision for increasing government efficiency by leveraging technology and artificial intelligence. Drawing parallels with successful businesses, she noted that efficiency is key to financial management. "The best of companies will tell you they can always run more efficiently," she stated, highlighting that improved efficiency could lead to lower state income tax rates.
Evette’s comments came as she considers a bid for the 2026 Republican gubernatorial nomination, alongside other potential candidates including state senators and U.S. representatives. With filing set to open next March, the state’s primary elections will take place in June.
As South Carolina’s budget remains constitutionally balanced and its rainy day fund robust, Evette’s push for reform signifies a pivotal moment in the state’s political landscape.
