Columbia, S.C.—U.S. Army Maj. Gen. R. Van McCarty Retires After 42 Years of Distinguished Service
On May 31, 2025, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. R. Van McCarty officially retired after an impressive 42-year career with the South Carolina National Guard. The formal retirement ceremony took place at the Lexington District 2 Performing Arts Center, celebrating a legacy defined by leadership, commitment, and community service.
Maj. Gen. McCarty, who served as the state’s 29th Adjutant General, emphasized a people-first approach throughout his tenure, prioritizing the welfare of service members and their families. His advocacy extended to mental health initiatives, notably the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) programs, addressing critical risk factors among troops.
Under his command, the South Carolina National Guard tackled numerous emergencies, including Hurricane Dorian, COVID-19, and civil unrest. His strategic leadership also enhanced national security, supporting deployments worldwide, and bolstering local military readiness.
Governor Henry McMaster praised McCarty’s unwavering dedication and leadership in times of crisis, stating he has significantly impacted South Carolina’s military community.
