Marc Maron announced the end of his influential podcast, “WTF With Marc Maron,” after nearly 16 years, with plans to conclude it this fall. In the latest episode, Maron, alongside producer Brendan McDonald, revealed that the decision to wrap up the podcast was mutual and not rooted in any difficult choice. The show, debuting on September 1, 2009, has featured over 1,600 episodes with high-profile guests, including Barack Obama, Keith Richards, and Carol Burnett. Notably, an episode with Robin Williams was recognized by the National Recording Registry as the first one-on-one podcast episode.
Maron’s announcement comes at a time when podcasts are evolving, with video formats becoming increasingly popular. The podcasting landscape has grown tremendously since its early days in the mid-2000s and, despite challenges in 2023, many established shows continued to thrive into 2024. Maron expressed a sense of fulfillment with the work they have done, stating, “We’re tired, we’re burnt out, and we are utterly satisfied.”
However, Maron clarified that he is not retiring from podcasting entirely. He indicated the possibility of returning to the medium in the future, stating that the end of “WTF” doesn’t mean he won’t engage in similar discussions or projects. “For now, we’re just…wrapping things up,” he said, emphasizing that it’s okay to conclude a chapter. Reflecting on their decision, he noted, “Thankfully, we both realized together that we were done.” The podcast has played a significant role in shaping the medium and has resonated with audiences for over a decade and a half.
