Nationwide Program to Feed Low-Income Seniors Returns to South Carolina

Press Release: South Carolina Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Returns for 2023

HOLLYWOOD, S.C. – The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program has officially returned, with all counties in South Carolina joining this year. Funded by a USDA grant, the program aims to support seniors by providing qualifying individuals aged 60 and older with $50 to spend on produce from local farmers. This year, South Carolina received over $650,000, allowing approximately 34,000 seniors to participate.

The initiative not only benefits seniors but also supports local farmers by increasing their exposure and sales. “It’s a double win,” says Will Batchelor, Director of Communications for the Department of Social Services. Eligible seniors must earn less than $27,861 annually, with joint filers capped at $37,814. Checks can be picked up at designated distribution centers, which will offer five $10 checks per participant.

The first distribution center in Charleston County is Mount Horr AME in Hollywood, open Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Seniors are required to apply in-person and provide a valid ID, with checks needed to be spent by Oct. 15. For more information on distribution centers and approved farmers, visit the program’s website.
