Where’s Marty McFly’s Guitar? The Quest for the ‘Back to the Future’ Prop Begins 40 Years Later

In the iconic film “Back to the Future,” Marty McFly famously played a Cherry Red Gibson ES-345 guitar during a pivotal 1950s high school dance. However, this important prop has been missing since the filming, prompting the guitar’s manufacturer, Gibson, to initiate a public search as the film celebrates its 40th anniversary. As part of this effort, Gibson is producing a documentary titled “Lost to the Future,” which aims to track down the legendary instrument.

Gibson has enlisted the help of “Back to the Future” stars, including Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Harry Waters Jr. They appear in a promotional video, invoking nostalgia with the film’s theme music. During the video, Lloyd humorously channels his character, Doc Brown, stating that the guitar is “lost to the future.” Fox lightheartedly speculates that it might be “somewhere lost in the space-time continuum” or perhaps in a Teamster’s garage.

In the film, McFly takes the stage at the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance, filling in for an injured band member. He plays “Earth Angel” and impresses the crowd with a rendition of “Johnny B. Goode,” despite it not being popular in the ’50s. McFly’s performance reflects his desire to incorporate signature guitar styles from legends like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, leading to a moment of awkward silence among the students, to which he quips, “I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet… but your kids are gonna love it.” This anecdote underscores both the cultural impact of the film and the quest to recover the missing guitar.
