Bridge Collapses on I-20 Following Tractor-Trailer Fire
AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has closed multiple lanes on Interstate 20 after a significant incident early this morning. Authorities reported that around 4 a.m., a tractor-trailer caught fire beneath the Old Vaucluse Road overpass, which compromised the bridge’s integrity.
Arriving on the scene, the Graniteville-Vaucluse-Warrenville Fire Department found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Shortly thereafter, a second bridge spanning the eastbound lane collapsed due to structural failure. In response, SCDOT has closed I-20 in both directions between Bettis Academy Road and Edgefield Highway (Hwy. 19), as well as Old Vaucluse Road, until further notice.
Detours have been established for motorists: Eastbound traffic is diverted off I-20 at Exit 11, returning at Exit 18, while westbound traffic will follow the reverse route. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize congestion and ensure safety. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
