I-20 Remains Closed in South Carolina After Fuel Truck Crash

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — A significant disruption on I-20 continues as repairs are underway following an overpass collapse caused by a fuel truck crash early Saturday morning. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) confirmed that the Old Vaucluse Road overpass fell onto the interstate, completely halting traffic in both directions.

Local fire officials reported that efforts to extinguish the fire from the wrecked fuel truck led to the overpass’s collapse. Thankfully, crews have successfully removed the debris, allowing for repair work to commence. SCDOT has begun milling and repaving the damaged sections of I-20 and replacing guardrails.

While precise details on reopening have not been provided, SCDOT emphasized they are working “as quickly and safely as possible.” The busy interstate remains closed, with detours at mile markers 11 and 18, supported by law enforcement to assist motorists.

Transportation Secretary Justin Powell addressed the media at the site, stating that emergency contracts are in place to expedite repairs. Although I-20 may reopen in a matter of days, the repair of the overpass itself may take several months.
