Greenville, SC: Protests Scheduled Amid Weekend Celebrations
Greenville, South Carolina, gears up for a weekend filled with both celebration and protest, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s military birthday event commemorating the 250th year. Organizers of multiple demonstrations, including the Spartanburg "No Kings" protest, emphasize their commitment to exercising First Amendment rights peacefully. "Tyranny and oligarchy are not welcome here or anywhere in the U.S.," asserted organizer Bex Elizebeth.
Garrett Gibson, another organizer, stressed the necessity of a safe environment for expression, saying, “Our priority is just making sure everything is safe.” The protests also respond to concerns voiced by veterans, as articulated by Michelle Shara of the 50501 movement: “The military is being used as a prop in a birthday party.”
Local leaders have urged demonstrators to maintain peace following recent civil unrest across the nation. Erin Halperin with Together Greenville noted the community’s history of peaceful protests, expressing frustration at incitement to violence.
Protest activities will commence at Unity Park at 10 a.m. and include veteran speakers, while the Spartanburg protest kicks off at the courthouse, proceeding to Morgan Square from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Organizers remain focused on dialogue, rejecting any form of violence or property damage.
