State Museum Becomes New ‘Home’ for SC Athletic Hall of Fame

South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame Finds a Home at the State Museum

COLUMBIA — After 65 years of honoring the state’s athletic legends, the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame (SCAHOF) has secured a permanent home at the South Carolina State Museum. The historic Columbia Mills Building, located at 301 Gervais Street, will serve as a venue to celebrate the nearly 350 members already enshrined and future inductees.

The formal announcement will occur on May 18 at 5:30 p.m. during the SCAHOF’s annual President’s Reception. "This is a significant milestone for athletics in South Carolina," said SCAHOF Executive Director Andy Solomon. "We’re excited to partner with the State Museum, marking a transformative change for both organizations."

Founded in the late 1950s by the South Carolina Association of Sportswriters, the Hall inducted its first class in 1960, featuring notable figures such as Rex Enright and Clemson’s Frank Howard as its first president. Solomon emphasized the importance of having a dedicated space to showcase the rich sports history of South Carolina, a vision long sought by the organization.

Amy Bartow-Melia, Executive Director of the State Museum, echoed Solomon’s sentiments, asserting that the partnership aims to preserve and share the state’s athletic accomplishments. "This collaboration will enhance our ability to inspire learning and curiosity while highlighting the extraordinary achievements of South Carolina athletes."

With this exciting development, the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame is poised to foster a deeper appreciation of the state’s sports legacy, nurturing future generations and continuing to celebrate its athletic icons.
