South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson to Enter 2026 Gubernatorial Race

CHAPIN, S.C. — Alan Wilson, South Carolina’s four-term Republican attorney general, is set to announce his candidacy for the state’s open gubernatorial race in 2026. A launch event is scheduled for Monday, as outlined in an invitation to supporters, despite official filing not opening until March.

Wilson is expected to face a crowded primary as other prominent Republicans, including Rep. Nancy Mace and Lt. Gov. Pam Evette, have expressed interest in the race. All eyes will be on President Donald Trump’s potential influence, given his strong support in South Carolina since his 2016 primary victory, which solidified his path as the GOP nominee. Trump’s backing recently helped Gov. Henry McMaster secure a primary win, leading to his long-standing tenure.

As attorney general, Wilson has been a staunch ally of Trump, signing letters against his impeachment and supporting him during his legal troubles. His political strategy aligns with the broader Republican trends in South Carolina, where GOP control has solidified over the years, particularly in gubernatorial races.

Wilson’s tenure has been marked by numerous high-profile lawsuits against Democratic administrations and a defense of the state’s strict abortion law. His office garnered national attention during the prosecution of Alex Murdaugh, whose trial captivated audiences and elevated Wilson’s profile further.

The upcoming gubernatorial race is anticipated to be fierce, especially with McMaster term-limited and multiple candidates vying for Trump’s endorsement. Wilson, the son of Rep. Joe Wilson, has dedicated nearly three decades to the Army National Guard and has been in public service since first being elected attorney general in 2010.
