Hurricane Watch Issued for Southern Mexico as Pacific Depression Strengthens

A hurricane watch has been issued for southern Mexico as a tropical depression in the eastern Pacific is expected to strengthen. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, the depression could become a tropical storm later Tuesday and is forecasted to develop into a hurricane by Wednesday. Currently, it has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and is moving west-northwest at 12 mph. When the winds reach the tropical storm threshold of 39 mph, it will be named “Erick.” At present, it is located approximately 495 miles southeast of Punta Maldonado in Guerrero state and is projected to approach the coast by late Wednesday.

A hurricane watch has been established for the Pacific coastline from Bahia De Huatulco in Oaxaca state to Punta Maldonado, indicating that hurricane conditions, characterized by winds exceeding 74 mph, are possible within the next two days. Additionally, a tropical storm watch is in effect further south, covering the area from Salina Cruz to Bahia De Huatulco.

Heavy rainfall is anticipated in parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero, with lighter precipitation expected in Chiapas, Tabasco, and Veracruz states, as well as in regions of El Salvador and Guatemala. Authorities are urging residents in the impacted areas to prepare for potential hazardous conditions, including strong winds and heavy rain.
