Alan Wilson Enters South Carolina Gubernatorial Race
CHAPIN, S.C. (AP) — Alan Wilson, the four-term Republican attorney general of South Carolina, is poised to enter the 2026 gubernatorial race, launching an anticipated primary contest that could see multiple candidates vie for former President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Wilson plans to announce his campaign officially at a rally on Monday, as indicated by an invitation from his campaign.
While the official filing for the 2026 elections won’t begin until March, several other Republicans are already making moves to run, including Rep. Nancy Mace and Lt. Gov. Pam Evette, both of whom have expressed serious interest in a gubernatorial bid. All three potential candidates are known for their support of Trump, whose popularity in South Carolina remains strong, particularly following his pivotal win in the 2016 GOP primary.
As attorney general, Wilson has actively aligned himself with Trump, including leading a letter against the impeachment proceedings in 2020. He also notably supported Trump during a recent trial in New York.
With current Gov. Henry McMaster term-limited, the upcoming Republican primary is anticipated to be fiercely competitive. South Carolina has a history of strong Republican leadership, often seeing intense intra-party battles.
Wilson’s experience includes involvement in national legal initiatives, like addressing child exploitation and advocating for prison reforms against contraband cellphone use. He has also defended South Carolina’s restrictive abortion laws, contributing to his profile as a prominent figure in state legal matters.
Having served nearly three decades in the Army National Guard, Wilson has been a prominent presence in state politics since he was first elected as attorney general in 2010. He lives in Lexington with his family and is the son of long-serving Rep. Joe Wilson.
