“W” Stands for WIS Radio and Television

Press Release: WIS Radio and Television’s Legacy in South Carolina’s Media Landscape

Columbia, SC – WIS Radio and Television has been a cornerstone of South Carolina’s media since the early 1930s, significantly influencing the broadcasting landscape. The station, known as WIS, first took to the airwaves in July 1930, making history as the last in the nation to receive a three-letter call sign. Notably, the call sign represented the "Wonderful Iodine State," a nod to South Carolina’s health benefits from iodine-rich water.

In 1953, WIS expanded its reach when it was licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to operate a commercial television station, designated as Channel 10—the only VHF channel serving central South Carolina. Over the decades, WIS has established itself as a trusted source of news and entertainment.

In 1987, following an ownership change, WIS Radio transitioned its call letters to WVOC while maintaining its AM broadcasting frequency at 560 kilocycles. This transition reflects the station’s commitment to evolving with the media landscape while honoring its storied history. Today, WIS Radio and Television continues to be a vital part of the state’s media heritage, serving communities across South Carolina.
