Homeland Security Investigates Human Trafficking at West Union Restaurant
West Union, S.C. — On Wednesday, Homeland Security Investigations executed a federal search warrant at Puerto Nuevo Restaurant, leading to the rescue of two juvenile victims of human trafficking and the arrest of eight individuals on immigration charges. Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the operation, stating that it aims to protect workers from exploitation.
The investigation garnered attention around 11:30 a.m. when agents were spotted at the restaurant on Foothill Center Drive, prompting the presence of local law enforcement and media. West Union Police Chief Ben Hailey clarified that the operation was not an ICE raid but a federal criminal investigation supported by the West Union Police Department.
Juan Leon, the restaurant’s manager, was present during the raid and claimed he was apprehended briefly but released shortly after. He expressed concern over the events, emphasizing the need for legal documentation during such operations on private property. Leon noted that eight workers were taken to an immigration hold facility, while discussions about organized protests to support affected employees were underway.
As the investigation proceeds, the restaurant is expected to remain closed for the time being.
