Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, reported being threatened while driving in a Cleveland suburb on Thursday morning by a man displaying a Palestinian flag. The suspect, identified as Feras S. Hamdan of Westlake, Ohio, allegedly cut off Miller’s vehicle and verbally assaulted him, making threats against both Miller and his young daughter. The incident is being investigated by local police and the U.S. Capitol Police, following concerns about rising political violence.
Miller, who is Jewish, detailed the encounter in a 911 call, stating that Hamdan yelled threats such as, “I’m going to cut your throat and your daughter’s,” and derogatory terms against Jews. Despite being shaken, Miller refrained from using his weapon during the confrontation. A police search for any discarded flag from Hamdan’s car yielded no results, and Miller later shared his experience via social media, expressing relief that his daughter was not present.
Following the threat, Miller maintained his schedule of meetings, emphasizing that such aggression is unacceptable and suggesting more civilized channels of communication for constituents. Hamdan turned himself in after Miller filed a criminal complaint, and he is awaiting a court appearance.
The rapid response from law enforcement was highlighted by the acting Capitol Police chief, who noted their commitment to protecting elected officials. The incident occurred shortly after a separate politically motivated attack on Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota, raising alarms about political safety. Various political leaders condemned the threats against Miller and called for a reduction in heated rhetoric to foster a safer political environment.
